Ducati had a very difficult season in 2004, the changes to their chassis and engine were possibly too big a step and neither rider could extract the required performance from the bike. For 2005 Ducati continued developing and correcting these issues and brought Ducati back to their winning ways.
With a staggering 260bhp, much of the development was focused on efficiently transferring this power to the tarmac. The unique twin pulse engine firing order meant that all four cylinders would fire during one revolution leaving a second revolution with no power pulses to allow the tyre to regain grip to the track surface.
Capirossi did not have an ideal start to the 2005 season after a crash in practice before the first race cracked a bone in his ankle. Although he still raced despite the injury, the effects of this injury were felt for several races to come. Towards the second half of the season Capirossi was regaining confidence in his bike and scored a 2nd place followed by back to back wins in Japan , and Malaysia. Capirossi also became the first rider to score a hat-rick of pole positions on a non Japanese bike since John Kocinski in 1993.
Ducati finished the 2005 championship 3rd place in the manufacturer standings, the GP5 was a clear step forward and an important part of the story leading up to their first rider and manufacturer world championship win in 2007.
This bike is currently in show bike condition, built with all correct works MotoGP parts sourced directly from Ducati. It is not currently in running condition but the parts are available to bring it to running condition if desired.
